Leonard Cohen – ”Dance Me To The End Of Love” (1984)
Cohen är något av en “late bloomer”, åtminstone i musikvärlden. Han hade redan gett ut flera diktsamlingar och romaner när han debuterade med “Songs Of Leonard Cohen” 1967. Då var han 33 år.
Så kanske inte så konstigt att han vid 50 års ålder gav ut urstarka “Various Positions” med monumentala “Hallelujah”. Men makalöst imponerade att det sista albumet kom ut vid 82 års ålder, samma år som han dog 2016. Och att det är så bra!
Den här låten är med på albumet från 1984 och är också bland hans mesta älskade låtar. Den är ganska gåtfull men jag låter Leonard själv få lägga ut texten (från Genius). Och den bakgrunden som kommer fram är fasansfull:
“Dance Me to the End Of Love’ … it’s curious how songs begin because the origin of the song, every song, has a kind of grain or seed that somebody hands you or the world hands you and that’s why the process is so mysterious about writing a song. But that came from just hearing or reading or knowing that in the death camps, beside the crematoria, in certain of the death camps, a string quartet was pressed into performance while this horror was going on, those were the people whose fate was this horror also. And they would be playing classical music while their fellow prisoners were being killed and burnt.“
